I write because I am written.

If Tolkien Could Tweet

The first thing to get straight is that if Tolkien could tweet, he’d go over the character limit, so that’s what I’m going to do for him here. These are snippets (I’m sure Tolkien would have called them “tweets” if he had only known) taken from his 350+ letters as compiled in The Letters of Tolkien, edited by Humphrey Carpenter (New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1981). Here you will find many of his musings on his own works, Christianity, fairy-tales, WWII, and, of course, C. S. Lewis.

Week 1. “A New Story About Hobbits.”

Week 2. “No Bedtime Story.”

Week 3. To Michael: “We May Laugh Together Yet.”

Week 4. To Christopher: “Soil for Unexpected Good.”

Week 5. To Christopher: “You Are Inside a Very Great Story.”

Week 6. “There Was an Eden.”

Week 7. “It Is Written in My Life-Blood.”

Week 8. “To England, To My Country.”

Week 9. “I Have Exposed My Heart To Be Shot At.”

Week 10. “We Shall Have to Write Them Ourselves.”

Week 11. “Strider Was a Shock.”

Week 12. “Like Spring After Winter”

Week 13. “I Saw That I Was Meant To Do It”
