70 years later on a springish winter day, I came to Bloody Omaha. More men died here than on any other beach on June 6, 1944. The first thing I did after running down the mossy stone ramp was place my hand on the sand: the flattest, hardest-packed sand I’ve ever felt. Perfect for boats and running boots. From this beach, the world felt calm and beautiful. The high tide rolled far up the sand and left long, shining mirrors of puffy clouds in deep blue sky. I stood in the waves with my back to the ocean, to distant England, and looked up at the cliffs that our soldiers fought so hard to take. For many, those cliffs were the last things they saw. Houses grow there now. I tried to imagine the hell. The silence and serenity were too much. I could hear the screams of men and bombs in my head, but outside, just the quiet of a hallowed shore at peace.
